An Alberta Regional Summit is in the planning stages and will happen on May 7/8, 2008 at Rocky Mountain College in Calgary, AB. A committee is meeting in November to start the planning process. This Summit will be similar to the National Conference held last June in Winnipeg. This was a collaboration between the Canadian Mennonite University (CMU) and the International Centre for Infectious Diseases (ICID). We had a good representation from many faiths and the goals set out were achieved. We now need to bring it down to a local level to keep the momentum moving forward and to introduce practical applications on how to get started.
We look forward to bringing awareness and education to the faith community in this province. My prayer is to introduce this type of summit across Canada and beyond.

Yesterday was the first meeting for the Alberta Regional Summit. There were 13 in attendance with a very good representation from the Health Regions across the Province as well as others from the Faith Community.
After some discussion and gaining insight into the roles of the various health sectors, we came to the conclusion that what is needed for this summit is building networks and trust between the different sectors. We need to build those relationships of trust and to understand the working of not only the various faith groups but also what the government can expect from us.
There are a good spirit of cooperation around the table so I was very encouraged by our first meeting. Much work ahead but we are engaged and moving forward with God's Direction.
Becca, I still am unsure how you and your business can help with this summit but if you have any suggestions, please let me know. There were so many resources around the table that I feel that we should be able to draw on much within our own province. I do appreciate your kind suggestion, however. If I can be of any help with your plans I will be happy to pass on information learned along the way.
Blessings All, Marg

EXCUSE... LIKELY REFLECTS
I hear nothing, I see nothing, I know nothing, and am all the better for it! ... Lack of love. Unfortunately, it is this very thinking that ultimately leads to the breakdown of civil societies.
Few other people or organizations are doing anything about it. Why should I? ... Being led by approval of others, not God. Jesus’ model to us was the opposite.
It is someone else’s responsibility – NOT MINE!... A deep rooted selfishness that doesn’t get that God might want to use them to help others in such emergencies.
IT’S NOT A LIFE OR DEATH PRIORITY RIGHT NOW... A need to be the life saver rather than first obedient to God. He may want you to prepare to save many lives later at the cost of one or two now. His call!
We are going to heaven anyway… So what if we die?... Selfishness, lack of any love. What about those left behind?
Everything is going great right now. Why rock the boat?... Pride and the need to be in control. God is known to rock our boat in such situations.

More questions to ask: church responsibilities in case of pandemics Published February 17th, 2007 H5N1 , info sources , preparedness , questions for other students
Planning for a pandemic: Resources for the Church in case of Avian flu is available from the Episcopal Church. I will try to find similar plans, if they exist, from the Orthodox, Moravian, and other churches. Please suggest contacts for these plans in the comments below. Some plans already exist for the other great pandemic we face, HIV/AIDS.
While each church (or synogogue or other religious community) will have its own particular focus, the ethical questions will probably be similar. Even if one isn’t in a religious community, the ethics of pandemic and disaster planning must be addressed. (Remember, Katrina was no Girl Scout).
Other questions to consider: who cares for the orphans? (see previous, | history |) can burials be delayed? are ministers equipped for post-traumatic counselling?

Hi Becca,
A list of denominations is found at http://www.churchresponse.org/page/Denominations as a starting point. I thought it would be helpful if we started cataloguing which denominations have started working on the issue of emergency (and specifically pandemic influenza) preparedness.

CMU Conference audio recordings The recent Pandemic Summit recorded the excellent messages which were presented and this information is too valuable not to share. If you would like a copy, please let me know and I will send out a copy. (for computers with DVD Players)
The Canadian Mennonite University and the International Centre of Infectious Diseases will soon have Pandemic information on their web sites and I will let you know when this is up and running.
Blessings, Marg
